Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK) - Colorado

Students in Colorado pulled on their wading boots and began conducting water quality tests on two creeks in Northeast Denver. Both Westerly and Sand Creek were identified as suffering potentially extensive water pollution from a former airport and Air Force Base nearby. The students are a part of Denver Youth Naturally, and most of them have had little experience in the out-of-doors. These kids make a commitment to the DYN program and go from knowing little about their environment to becoming educated and dedicated stewards.

Water quality testing was performed monthly, and the students participated in public presentations to the community to explain the test results, how people can help keep the creeks clean, and water conservation techniques. They also performed extensive cleanups of the creek banks and learned about aquatic ecology and urban wildlife.

Students who participate a year or more in the program go on to become Youth Mentors and pass on their knowledge and passion to new students. All students learn about conservation, environmental education, and environmental career opportunities.
