National Association of Home Builders Show Village is
donated by D.R. Horton/Torrey Homes and Professional
Builder Magazine to benefit the Captain Planet Foundation.
This year's National Association of Home Builders Show
Village house is being built in a mere six days. |

It is not much
a feat of construction magic as it is a commitment to community.
When Torrey Homes' workforce of 100 builders and six managers
complete the 2,335 square-foot home, which normally takes
two months to build, it will be sold to benefit the Captain
Planet Foundation, who gives grants to youth all over the
world for hands-on environmental projects. "We don't want
to toot our horn because we can build this house in six
days," said Rick Thompson, vice president of construction
of Torrey Homes. "We want to demonstrate our commitment
to the community by giving something back."
The home is a
joint venture between Professional Builder Magazine, Turner
Broadcasting System, Inc's Captain Planet Foundation and
D.R. Horton Inc., parent company of Torrey Homes. Torrey
Homes will move the house and rebuild it in one of their
Atlanta communities in College Park. The house will then
be sold, will all proceeds from the sale of the house will
go to the Captain Planet Foundation.

Torrey Homes
Director of Operations Scott Davis said that logistics,
planning, and wall-component construction would be the biggest
challenges. He also noted that the home must be built so
that it can be taken apart and moved easily once the NAHB
show is over. A cross-base type foundation is being used
because a concrete foundation cannot be poured in the World
Congress Center parking lot. Another great benefit of the
Show Village home is that it is expected to meet EarthCraft
standards endorsed by the Greater Atlanta Home Builders
Association. EarthCraft standards are blueprints for healthy,
comfortable, affordable homes that cut energy and water
bills by 30% and ensure the homes are made of ecologically
sustainable materials.
