The Whittemore
Wildlife Sanctuary invited all county-wide day care centers,
nursery, and pre-schools to join in a "Garden Quilt" program.
Over 500 children ended up participating in this community
program along with parents, teachers, and senior citizens.
Everyone worked together to plant the first seeds in the greenhouse
planting boxes and waited expectantly as they started to sprout.
After the weather warmed up, and the plants were big enough,
everyone participated in the, "Garden Quilt Celebration Day,"
where the plants were transferred to the "Garden Quilt" area
of the sanctuary.
The children tended
to their project all year long, and in the late summer they
began to harvest the fruits of their labor. The produce harvested
included tomatoes, beans, radishes, lettuce, sweet peppers,
and cucumbers.
The brilliantly
blooming flowers included marigolds, zinnias, Canterbury bells,
morning glories, and sweet peas. The produce from the garden
quilt was given to local nursing homes so that the entire
community could benefit from the Garden Quilt.
Captain Planet
Foundation offers congratulations to a community that is truly
working together.
