John Sibley Named Executive
Director
of the Captain Planet Foundation
John Sibley has been named executive director of the Captain Planet Foundation (CPF); it was announced by Laura Turner Seydel, CPF board chairwoman. Sibley will oversee all programs, personnel, fundraising, administrative and financial matters, and business and community outreach.
“John is a results-oriented individual who comes to us with many years of experience in the areas of environmental and public policy,” said Seydel. “We are fortunate to have an executive of his caliber join the Foundation and look forward to the positive results his leadership will provide.”
Prior to joining the Captain Planet Foundation, Sibley was president of the Georgia Conservancy from 1998 to 2005, where he led the Conservancy’s programs to promote environmental education, clean water, clean air, land conservation and smart growth. He also built successful programs through new coalitions such as Mothers and Others for Clean Air, the Georgia Land Conservation Partnership and the Georgia Water Coalition.
"I am honored to work with the Turner family," said Sibley. "After my years of working with leaders of today, mainly on Georgia issues, the Captain Planet Foundation offers the challenge of working with the leaders of tomorrow, our children, on how to protect our fragile Earth."
Sibley has been a recognized leader on public issues in the state, particularly environmental and growth management concerns for more than 20 years. He has successfully led both for profit and nonprofit organizations and has established himself as an outstanding manager with significant accomplishments in community leadership, advocacy and fundraising. His successes have been characterized by building coalitions and developing consensus in diverse constituencies.
A native Georgian, Sibley earned a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and a bachelor of laws degree from Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut. He is active in various professional and civic groups throughout Georgia, and is currently a board member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, serving as chair of the public funding campaign. He also sits on the boards of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, the Georgia Conservancy, the Preserve at Callaway and the advisory committee for the Livable Communities Coalition.
Sibley has received numerous recognitions over the years, most recently,
