Sona
Chambers
holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies
from Appalachian State University, a Women's Studies Certificate
from Rutgers University and a Master of Science degree in
Environmental Science from Indiana University. She has worked
full-time and served on several boards of trustees for numerous
national not-for-profits. She has also worked as a contractor
on environmental restoration projects in Alabama, Hawaii,
Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin for the US Army, US Navy,
and the US Environmental Protection Agency. She worked as
a volunteer for the US Fish and Wildlife Service for two summers,
studying the effects for polychlorinated biphenols on migratory
birds, while completing work on her master's degree.
Her work is dedicated to implementing the CPF board of trustees'
vision of giving youth the opportunity to learn first hand
about their natural environment through hands-on conservation
and habitat restoration initiatives. Building partnerships
with groups whose own mission is aligned with the Foundation's
objectives carries out this vision. These include but are
not limited to: Boys and Girls Clubs, Girls, Inc., Camp Fire
Boys and Girls, Girl Scouts, Native American tribal communities,
botanical gardens, zoos, environmental education and nature
centers, national and local Audubon societies, community gardens,
adopt-a-stream programs, and various governmental agencies.
Her strategic plan
includes building both traditional and non-traditional alliances.
Traditional alliances with professional teacher organizations
like TeachNet, North American Association of Environmental
Educators, National Science Teachers Association, National
Education Association, Environmental Education Funders Forum,
and Business for Social Responsibility, allow CPF to form
relationships with potential grantees. Non-traditional alliances
with Cartoon Network and CNN take the CPF mission to a global
audience through banner ad placement and live media coverage.
Captain Planet Appearances at national athletic events and
recreational venues like the cruise and airline industries
have resulted in peripheral projects like Captain Planet environmental
education camps on Carnival Cruise Lines and increased awareness
of International Migratory Birding Day at an Orioles baseball
game.
